Keep in mind that you won't be able to see the video on a Kindle. This is 1,665 locations focusing on the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, Steuben and Goya at the end of the Second World War.
As someone interested in WWII, I knew that the German evacuations as the Red Army advanced were full of horror, but this book really brings it home.
The focus is on the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that should have carried less than 2,000 - but actually had over 10,000 aboard when sunk by a Russian sub. The three sinkings in total led to the death of 20,000 - mostly refugees.
The images of horror as people died in the icy seas of the Baltic will leave a lasting impression on anyone who can still feel. The horror as the water plunged into the ships, the wounded soliders who shot themselves to avoid drowning, the desperate attempts to get on anything that could float, the one float full of the frozen dead.
It is correctly pointed out the survivors haven't been able to talk about what happened to them until now. It's tragic that now there are those in Germany trying to hijack their suffering for political reasons.
In the end, no one escapes war uninjured.

Route of Death The Last Sacrifice of WWII eBook Bjorn Hagberg Martin Widman Reviews
Fantastic book
Carried away with some of the detail.
This book brings life of civilian population in the waning days of WW2 to reality.... over 20k refugees and war wounded lost their lives to submarine attacks, on three (3) ships, at the close of the conflict....
As a fan of history *television* I figured that I'd give Route of Death a try, and boy am I glad that I did! This is an awesome look at not only a untold portion of World War II, it goes beyond with the images and discussion of the current states of the ships that are discussed. I found myself sharing detail of the book with co-workers on my breaks as I'd read it. Definitely a fast read for me.
This is a book that will fascinate you, and make your heart ache, all at the same time. It is detailed and factual, yet also very personal. It tells a story that needs to be shouted from every rooftop, a story that underscores the cruel, uncaring, side of Hitler juxtaposed against the desperation of the German people. The story alternately leaves you slack-jawed and pained. At the end, you can't believe it happened, although you know it did.
Because this is a "Vook," there are videos ate the beginning of every chapter. It was somewhat annoying that I could not see the videos using the Cloud Reader, but that was a small distraction from a powerful story.
I liked the book and the historical accounts of these little known marine disasters which until now have all but gone unknown to the outside world. Has excellent photos of the wrecks bringing the writing to life. My biggest disappointment was being charged a bit extra for the virtual video clips with each chapter heading which I was never able to get to play on any media player. It would not work at all. As I said I really enjoyed the book, but was disappointed to not be able to view the clips as part of this riveting piece of history. Thanks to Mr. Hagberg for documenting this history and telling the story of more of Hitler's victims.
For the most part, I find that many of the history Vooks come up short with the information they contain and the manor in which it is presented. This Vook, however, really shook me to the core.
I am not a WWII history buff, but I have always been fascinated with the great struggle and how our "Greatest Generation" sacrificed totally to ultimately end the worst threats to freedom that the world has ever known. The atrocities which took place just before and, of course, during the war years are seemingly well documented and yet, this information took me completely by surprise.
This book is well written and the photographs are astounding when viewed on sources other than the . Like all Vooks with supposed audio/video capability, the A/V doesn't work on s or computers, hence my 4 star rating.
It is hard to imagine the abject terror suffered by the doomed aboard these three ships. The authors did a great job of conveying the entire scene from start to tragic finish. It is sad to think of the few who survived, spending the rest of their lives reliving the nightmare of these events and NEVER outliving the heartbreak they witnessed or the guilt of having been lucky enough to survive.
This is a devastating account of the horrors of those times which will leave you shaken to your very core. Read it and weep.
